Life is all about relationships. We have work-related relationships, we have acquaintances, we have friendships, familial and intimate relationships. Maimonides, one of Judaism’s greatest scholars, wrote that man is a social animal. We have no choice but to interrelate with other people. It is relationships with others that allow us to achieve things in life. Without relationships the human race could not perpetuate itself. For any business to succeed there needs to be a relationship between two parties – a buyer and a seller.

Inspiring G-d and Performing Miracles: PDF Print E-mail

As a teacher, rabbi and writer I am fortunate to be able to interact positively with many people. Often people come to speak with me or join a class that I give with a passionate craving for spiritual knowledge and inspiration. Unbeknown to them their desire to learn and to be spiritually uplifted inspires me more than I could ever inspire them. This fact is backed up by the Kabbalists who tell us that a student with a powerful desire to learn awakens within the teacher abilities and teaching talents that are normally dormant.

Is Free Healthcare Our Moral Duty? PDF Print E-mail

The argument about healthcare in the United States is heating. According to many on the right the United States has the best healthcare in the world and it should not be tampered with. According to the left the entire healthcare system needs to be overhauled because, in their view, it does not meet the needs of a modern society.

But the question is more fundamental: what are our ethical responsibilities when it comes to caring for the health of others? Do we as a society have a responsibility to provide health care that is—similar the National Health Service in the UK—universal, tax funded and free at the point of need?

In an article in the Wall Street Journal this week Alan Dershowitz states that many American Jewish supporters of United States President Barrack Obama feel that they have been a victim of a bait and switch.  He argues that during the election campaign last year Obama declared his strong support of Israel but now that he is President he is taking stances that seem to be opposed to Israel’s best interests. He then tries to defend Obama’s demand to halt all settlements, including natural growth, as pro-Israel rather than calling it what it is—a US President taking a blatantly Arab propagandist point of view.

Self Serving Executives of Our Non-profits PDF Print E-mail

This week the Froward published an article that exposed which executives of major American Jewish organizations took personal pay cuts while firing staff and which did not. Out of the twenty one organizations surveyed only nine of the executives did so. Three of them refused to comment. The rest laid off employees while their own salaries remained sky high. While this shows a complete lack of leadership and commitment to people less fortunate than themselves it may not be unethical. The ethical dilemma here is another one. Is it proper for executives of Jewish non-profit organizations to be paid a base salary in excess of half a million dollars?
