ImageIf we had a foolproof way of overcoming destructive temptations and passions, life would be much simpler and more pious for all of us.

One of the biggest challenges humans encounter is overcoming emotional urges that lead us down destructive paths. When confronted by forbidden temptation, one may become gripped by illicit feelings of affection. When wronged, we may experience an intense desire to wreak revenge. Upon encountering another’s extreme success, we may be overcome with jealousy. Indeed success itself may breed inappropriate feelings of haughtiness.

Watching society over the last ten years has been like observing a sick person who, unaware of his illness, continues pursuing a lifestyle that will eventually kill him. Some people noticed this and tried to warn others about it but no one was listening. Israelis aren’t stupid and they no longer trust a word their politicians say, especially when main players, Netanyahu and Livni, have deceived them before

Deceit is seen by Judaism as especially repugnant. As a prelude to the Israelite’s entry into the Land of Israel the Torah warns the Jewish people against acting dishonestly. It says (Deuteronomy 25:13), “You shall not keep in your pouch two different weights, one large and one small”.

World Magazine: Title tell-alls

Temporarily insane authors choose obscure titles; for example, does the title More Than Kindness tell you that a book is about abortion and adoption? But the cover of Theodore Roosevelt Malloch's Spiritual Enterprise: Doing Virtuous Business (Encounter, 2008) tells you what's up—and what's inside shows clear Christian thinking. Levi Brackman and Sam Jaffe provide a folksy Old Testament equivalent in Jewish Wisdom for Business Success: Lessons from the Torah and Other Ancient Texts (Amacom, 2008).
