Manipulating the Energies

Levi Brackman, November 13, 2009May 7, 2017

We have all experienced interesting coincidences in our lives. Some of us, however, experience them more often and more intensely than others. But are they really coincidences or is there something else at work here.

There is a story in this weeks’ Torah portion that sheds light on the phenomena of coincidences and explains how we can manipulate the underlying energy that exists in the universe. The story begins after the death of Abraham’s wife Sarah and it becomes apparent that his son Isaac needs to find a wife and get married.

Abraham sends his trusted servant Eliezer on a mission to find a wife for Isaac. There were obvious anxieties that Eliezer had in connection with his mission. So he made the following deal with God.

He said: ‘I am standing by the water fountain, and the daughters of the people of the city are coming out to draw water. And it will be, the girl to whom I will say, ‘Lower your pitcher and I will drink,’ and she will say, ‘Drink, and I will also water your camels will be the correct girl who will be the wife for Isaac. ‘

In fact no sooner had he finished speaking these words did his prediction begin to occur. The story continues with the girl -Rebecca -inviting Eliezer to meet her family. Dinner is set and before they begin to eat Eliezer insists to be able to tell the how he met Rebecca. The Torah does something remarkable it repeats the entire story word for word. This is despite the fact that the story was told by the Torah previously word for word.

Why does the Torah do this? Couldn’t the Torah just have said something like ‘And Eliezer told all that happened ‘ without repeating the entire story again? And the fact that we know that the Torah does not repeat words for no reason make this question all the stronger.

The Torah is obviously trying to teach us a fundamental law: If you are tapped into the underlying Divine energy of the universe and are aware that all the physical externalities are but in service of that energy one is able to manipulate it to achieve ones goals and desires.

There is therefore no such thing as a coincidence rather all things have a purpose and are directed by the Divine energies of the universe. As long as we are cognizant of the said energies we are able direct our thoughts, speech and desires towards attracting them to create a set of realities according to our own will.

This is what Eliezer was doing and in order to teach us how we in fact can act in a similar manner the Torah tells us the entire story over again.

Anything to excess is not good for us. Too much anger can ruin a relationship as can an excess of kindness. Overeating is harmful, but an over- preoccupation with becoming slender can lead to anorexia. As Maimonides said, one must live a balanced life, steering the middle path between too…

Matisyahu is now an international phenomenon; he is a reggae singer with a difference. Instead of dreadlocks he sports a trilby. His beard is predicated on the Kabbalists’ theosophy instead of Rastafarian tradition and his clothing places him in an Ultra Orthodox Jewish enclave rather than a black ghetto. Now…
